At one point I was looking through Wendy’s filing cabinet next to her desk for anything related to the current bills and medical stuff. I opened the drawer on the top and found her extra check book registers, postage stamps and return address labels. But underneath were three envelopes. They had my name, Josh and Joey’s names, respectively. It seems Wendy had left a letter to each of us.
The strange thing was that all three letters were opened. That is, the envelopes had been sealed at one time then later re-opened. It turns out these letters were actually written on June 23, 2013. I couldn’t remember off the top of my head exactly what was happening at that time so I checked this blog for that time and found the corresponding blog entry.
That was the day that Wendy was going in for her surgery (Double Mastectomy). Apparently she had written these letters on the chance that something happened and she didn’t make it back to us. I can only surmise that the letters were re-opened after she did return with the thought she would later revise them, but never got the chance. I gave Josh and Joey their letters and have read mine several times. In a way it is kind of strange and exciting at the same time. The letter was very heartfelt and special.
So, other surprises…several days ago I received a bouquet of flowers from Jim & Betsy Balshuweit / Diane & Pete Smith, whom I have never met, but have heard about from Wendy who is Jim and Diane’s sister. So thanks for the flowers! They’ve brightened up the place a bit.
I also received a card from Diane & Pete Smith and also one from the local Hospice that helped Wendy at the end. I appreciate all the well wishes, condolences, sympathies, etc. It’s nice to know there are people out there who care, even if I haven’t met some of you. =)
Update: Just got a card from my Aunt Christine too! Thank you!
Update: Just got a card from my Aunt Brenda/Uncle Don. Thank you! Also this fruit basket arrived from my sister Kristy. Thank you!
Update: Received two cards in the mail; one from Uncle Ed/Aunt Liz and the other from Jim & Sue Lacey. It looks like you were on the same page. 😉
Sue, thank you for the letter with the story of how you met Wendy. That was awesome. Wendy once told me about it, but not in the detail that you provided. What a great friend you were to her!
