Baby Steps

I keep having to remind myself that baby steps are still progress. Two and a half weeks post surgery now with a couple of doctor’s appointments behind me and I’m getting anxious to get back to “normal” if there is such a thing.

This past Tuesday, July 9th I went back to my surgeon for a check up and was so happy that I wanted to dance around the doctor’s office shouting “WOOHOO!!” Three out of four of my drains were ready to come out! What a relief to only have one left to deal with. It will probably be several more days before the final drain is ready to come out but I can live with that. Also, nearly all of the staples were removed at this visit as well. The doctor decided to leave four staples in at the sight of a particularly stubborn blood clot. But again, I can live with just four staples. I also had a burning question I was dying to ask…”Can I start driving again?” I wanted to throw my arms around the Doc and give him a big hug when his answer was “Yes!”. Such a happy day!

After my visit with the doctor I looked at my hubby and told him I was ready for my next haircut. Yep, time to go shorter. I’ve realized that not being able to lift my arms above my head keeps me from doing many things like styling my hair. So my solution is to cut it off so I don’t need to worry about styling it. Wash and go! The best part was my darling husbands reaction to my new drastically different do, “I love it, you look like a sexy, nerdy librarian!”

Fast forward to today, Thrusday, July 11th and another check up with my surgeon. Time to make sure that the side the drains were removed from isn’t accumulating too much fluid. As expected there was some fluid that needed to be drained via a very big, scary looking needle! YIKES! But I am happy to report that it looked much scarier that it was. I only felt a little pinch and then just had to concentrate on holding still while the doctor extracted said fluid. He said that everything is healing nicely and I’m right where I should be. So my next appointment will be Monday for more of the same.
